Cindy Williams, actor who played Shirley opposite Penny Marshall’s Laverne on the popular sitcom “Laverne & Shirley,” has died, her family said Monday. Williams died in Los Angeles after a brief illness, her children, Zak and Emily Hudson said in a statement released through family spokeswoman Liza Cranis.

Cindy Williams, full name Cynthia Jane Williams, was born on August 22, 1947, in the Van Nuys district of Los Angeles, California. She was 75.

Family

Williams was married to Bill Hudson of the musical trio Hudson Brothers in 1982. The marriage ended in divorce in 2000. The couple has two children, Emily (born in 1982) and Zachary (born in 1986). She had one sibling, named Carol Ann.

Career

Williams attended the Los Angeles City College, majoring in theatre arts. After completing her graduation, Williams launched her professional career in acting. After working in several television commercials, she landed her first television project, an appearance in the 1969 ABC comedy series Room 222. She soon followed it up with roles in Nanny and the Professor and Love, American Style.

She is best known for her role as Shirley Feeney on the ABC Sitcom Happy Days, and its spinoff, Laverne & Shirley. She also played major roles on the short-lived sitcoms Normal Life, Getting By, and has appeared in a number of television films. On the big screen, Williams has worked in movies including American Graffiti, The Conversation, Big Man on Campus, and Meet Wally Sparks.

Awards and achievements

Williams received a Best Supporting Actress nomination from BAFTA for American Graffiti in 1973. In 1978, she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her role in Laverne & Shirley. She was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2004.
