Drew Barrymore is receiving considerable backlash after she invited a transwoman named Dylan Mulvaney on The Drew Barrymore Show on Monday and in a moment during the interview, knelt in front of her.

Mulvaney is a transwoman who has become a TikTok sensation after documenting her transition in her 365 Days of Girlhood series. She talked about bringing “joy” and “comedy” to a world where there is “so much hatred directed toward the trans community.”

“The greatest weapon I can contribute is trans joy and comedy and talking about hard subjects and really intricate moments of a transition, and try to let everybody in to see that I’m not a monster,” she told Barrymore on the show. “I’m not somebody that is anything but trying to be myself and be happy.”

The pair talked about finding the strength to “keep being the joy.” Mulvaney said it’s important to “surround yourself with good people.” She told Barrymore, “It’s interesting because I look at someone like you and I can’t imagine anybody disliking you.”

Her response made the talk show host emotional and she got on her knees and held Mulvaney’s hands as she admitted, “Oh, please. Do you want to know, ironically, who dislikes me the most sometimes? Myself.”

The moment went viral on Twitter, mostly because people chose to attack and demean Barrymore over the kneeling gesture, calling her “anti-feminist” and other defamatory terms.

However, there were also those who spoke out in support of Barrymore, including anti-Trump journalist Ed Krassenstein. “To all of the bad people out there attacking Drew Barrymore simply for showing compassion to Transgender TikTok star Dylan Mulvaney, you are also probably the same people who have no problem watching Tucker Carlson spew his hateful dishonest rhetoric on a daily basis on Fox News.…” he said.
