Actor Brett Goldstein wins the 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series for “Ted Lasso.”

The Apple TV show was expected to sweep away the awards in the Comedy section, and it hasn’t failed, at least in the initial bit as along with Goldstein, Hannah Waddingham won the Emmy Award for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for her role in the same series.

Both are out of the Saturday Night Live talent pool and have excelled in the show. However, the night could only get better for the “Ted Lasso” crew.

The heart-warming comedy follows American football coach Ted Lasso’s transition to the United Kingdom. There he is given the responsibility of leading an English Premier League team, despite not knowing a single thing about the game. He must lead a dressing room filled with star players, manage their egos and take them to glory.

In its debut season, the show has been nominated for the best comedy series, an award that it’s likely to take home. While the show has received 20 nominations, it can win a maximum of nine trophies because of overlaps.

Meanwhile, an ebullient Waddingham said series star and producer Jason Sudeikis “changed my life with this, and more importantly my baby girl’s.” Goldstein then called the show the “privilege and pleasure” of his life.

The show opened with a musical number that featured host Cedric the Entertainer rapping a modified version of the Biz Markie hip-hop hit “Just a Friend” with lyrics like “TV, you got what I need.” LL Cool J bounded from the audience as stars like Rita Wilson, Mandy Moore and more dropped verses celebrating the breadth of television.

Seth Rogen presented the first award, throwing some cold water on the celebratory vibe by noting that the Emmys were being held in a giant tent. “There’s way too many of us in this little room,” he exclaimed in what seemed to be an attempt to be funny that fell flat.

“I would not have come to this,” he continued.

“Why is there a roof? It’s more important that we have three chandeliers than make sure we don’t kill Eugene Levy tonight. That is what has been decided.”
