The song ‘Tanha Tanha Yahan pe Jeena’ from the Bollywood movie Rangeela was a raging hit in the 1990s. The song not only epitomised the sensuality Urmila Matondkar would bring to the screen but also created a lot of buzz for her on-screen chemistry with actor Jackie Shroff.

In a recent interview, Urmila talked about one of the sequences in which she wore Jackie Shroff’s ‘ganjee’ for one of the scenes.

“No one knows, but I had worn Jackie Shroff’s Ganjee in Rangeela for the Tanha Tanha song and to be honest, it was fun”, said Urmila.

She revealed it was an impromptu costume selection.

“The sequence had to be unique and refreshing and we were told not to do things after thinking and researching. We wanted to be natural and while we were being briefed about costumes, Jackie being Jackie, told me to wear his Ganjee. I was slightly apprehensive, but I went ahead with it and left everything in god’s hand. I obviously got a lot of appreciation and love, so it ended well for me”, she further added.

Rangeela completed 25 years last year. Designer Manish Malhotra revealed that the movie was the reason that the FilmFare introduced a Best Costume Design category.

“Filmfare enforced for the first time a Costume Design Award. The trendsetting spectacle of Urmila has not only set the tone but will stay in people’s hearts forever,” said Manish Malhotra.

Rangeela was directed by Ram Gopal Varma. It involved a love triangle in which Urmila played the role of an aspiring actor. Aamir Khan played the role of her street-smart friend and Jackie shroff played the role of a film star.
