In a grand win for Indian cinema, MM Keeravani has won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu from the SS Rajamouli film RRR.

Who is MM Keeravani?

MM Keeravani is a composer of Indian film music. He has worked in the Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam industries.

On July 4, 1961, Keeravani was born in a small Andhra Pradesh town called Kovvur. He has grown up in a musical family. His father, Koduri Siva Shakthi Datta, is a lyricist and screenwriter, while his mother, Kalyani Malik, is a playback singer.

Keeravani is a cousin of RRR director SS Rajamouli. His son, Kaala Bhairava, is one of the singers of Naatu Naatu.

Keeravani began his career as an assistant to composers C. Rajamani and K. Chakravarthy. The 1990 film Kalki was his major break, but the film somehow never saw the light of day. His first big release came with the film Manasu Mamatha.

The very next year, he worked on the film Kshana Kshanam by Ram Gopal Verma. The success of  Kshana Kshanam’s music made Keeravani a household name in South India.

He has also had an impressive career in Bollywood, having worked on films like Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin, Sur – The Melody of Life, Zakhm, Saaya, Jism. He also composed songs for Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Paheli.

Keeravani won a National Award for the film  Annamayya in 1997. He has also received a total of eight Filmfare Awards for his music.

His wife,  M. M. Srivalli, is also involved in the film business. She works as a line producer.
