Machine Gun Kelly, the singer, has tried his hand at co-writing, co-directing and starring in ‘Good Mourning’ a stoner comedy. He created the movie along with friend and fellow musician Mod Sun, and spoke to The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere, about the inspiration behind the story.

MGK said at the Los Angeles launch, Friday, that the idea came from a “gnarly spiral”. The singer was in his early days of dating ‘Transformers’ star Megan Fox when he misinterpreted a text from the actor, right before she left for her project overseas where Fox wouldn’t have cell reception for three weeks.

The singer thought she had broken up with him and freaked out to his friends. To get his mind off the situation, he and Mod Sun decided to turn it into a film plot. Thus, ‘Good Mourning’ was born, which tells the tale of a movie star, played by MGK, whose world is turned upside down by a breakup text, and he faces the choice between going after his love or getting a life-changing role in a major film.

MGK, whose real name is Colson Baker, also directed his now-fiancee Fox in the movie. Speaking at the premiere, he revealed what he liked about the experience, praising the actor’s wit and her ability to throw jabs, which had MGK gleeful behind the camera.

The film is reportedly inspired by stoner comedies like ‘Pineapple Express’, ‘Grandma’s Boy’, and ‘Half Baked’. MGK confirmed, “we wanted to make one because it felt like a void for the next generation, there weren’t any being made”, adding, “Outside of the fact that it’s inspired from a real place, we’re also super-stoners so we felt appropriate to step in as writers and directors and represent for the weed community”.

Mod Sun chipped in saying, “We wanted to invent something that can live on in the stoner archives.”
