After an incredible career that saw Whitney Houston rise to the top as one of the best-selling music artists of all time, she passed away suddenly at the age of 48 a decade ago. The musical biopic, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, will help the world relive some of the singer’s most memorable highs and painful lows more than ten years after her tragic death.
For those keeping track, since the singer’s untimely death, at least three projects about her have appeared on television or in theatres. The Lifetime biopic Whitney (2015), the British-American documentary Whitney: Can I Be Me (2017), and the highly contentious documentary Whitney are all included on this list (2018).

Release Date
I Wanna Dance with Somebody will have its US theatrical release on December 21 in an effort to coincide with the holiday season. Because the movie won’t be released in theatres until Friday, December 23, prospective viewers in the UK will have to wait a little longer to watch it.
Cast
The film is directed by Kasi Lemmons and written by Anthony McCarten.
The legendary diva from Newark, New Jersey will be portrayed by Naomi Ackie, a native of London. Previous roles of the BAFTA-winning actor include Master of None, The End of the F***ing World, and Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. In the Whitney Houston biopic, Ackie will star alongside Stanley Tucci as Clive Davis and Ashton Sanders as Bobby Brown. Whitney’s parents, Cissy Houston and John Houston, will be portrayed by Clarke Peters and Tamara Tunie, respectively.

Plot
Although there aren’t many specific details about the plot yet, we do know that Houston will be featured throughout the entire movie. Anthony McCarten, a screenwriter and producer, is quoted in the same Deadline article as saying: “While being very frank about the price that super-stardom exacted, it will be both the rich and complex saga of the search for the perfect marriage between song and singer and audience, and at the same time the moving tale of a simple Jersey girl trying to find her way back home.”
We can deduce from that statement that the narrative will not try to whitewash Houston’s personal struggles or her tragic passing in 2012 at the age of 48. Whitney Houston, arguably the greatest female R&B pop vocalist of all time, is expected to be honoured with a joyous, tearful, and heartbreaking celebration of her life and music through the film.
