An ongoing rumor claims that Lydia Tar died at the Oscars 2023 following a nasty fall on Sunday. But just like other celebrities are often targetted by death hoaxes, similarly, Tar, who is a fictional character, has fallen victim to the same.

Who is Lydia Tar?

Lydia Tar is the leading character of the movie Tar, the feature film starring Cate Blanchett, which was nominated for six Oscars this year, including Best Picture and Best Actress, but won none.

Lydia, the composer in the film, is not a real person, but a fictional one. The film is not explicitly based on any existing female composer. Due to the way, the film was marketed, led people to believe that Lydia was a real person on whom the film was based — a sort of biopic.

The official synopsis reads: “The film, set in the international world of classical music, centers on Lydia Tár, widely considered one of the greatest living composer/conductors and first-ever female chief conductor of a major German orchestra.”

Is Lydia Tar real?

No, Lydia Tar is not real. But people have been led to believe that she might be a real person partly because of a Twitter account called @LydiaTarReal. The account was created in November 2022 and has over 25,000 followers. It also appears to link to a website promoting Tar’s fictional work and upcoming book but actually opens up to donation pages for causes such as LGBTQ+ rights, incarcerated youth, and abortion.

Lydia Tar death hoax

@LydiaTarReal teamed up with Slate to provide satirical “liveblogged coverage” of the 2023 Oscars Award ceremony, which took place at Los Angeles’s Dolby Theatre on Sunday, March 12, 2023. Since then, a rumor that Lydia died spread online after the Twitter account posted a fake death announcement, confirming Tar’s death and was signed off by “Team LT.”

Lydia Tar could not have died at the Oscars because she is not real. But that has not stopped the rumor from spreading. A tweet from @LydiaTarReal joked that she had fallen down the stairs at the Dolby Theatre. It also added a photoshopped image depicting the scene.
