The singer said though he was famous, it still felt empty to him. “It was like I had all this success and I’m still sad, and I’m still in pain. And I still have these unresolved issues.’ And I thought all the success was going to make everything good. And so for me, the drugs were a numbing agent to just continue to get through.”

Bieber said his marriage and his faith brought him back and made him a person that he is today. He added both things didn’t depend on him performing in exchange for money.

The pop star revealed that his life has mostly been shaped by his managers and bodyguards, who were there to keep his business on track.

The 27-year-old singer said he always was “compelled” to marry. “I just felt like that was my calling. Just to get married and have babies and do that whole thing.”

According to GQ, his wife Hailey was the first piece of his redemption. “She is just a strong, consistent, stabilizing force in his life,” said one of his friends.

He spent the first year as a husband “on eggshells,” he says, but at some point he started to actually believe.
