Prof. Amartya Sen has earned worldwide distinction in Economics.
Amartya Kumar Sen is an economist and philosopher from India who has lived and worked in the US and the UK since 1972. Sen has contributed to welfare economics, social choice theory, economic and social justice, decision theory, development economics, public health, and metrics of country well-being. He has also studied the economics of famines.
He presently holds the positions of Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University as well as Thomas W. Lamont University Professor. At the University of Cambridge, he formerly held the position as Master of Trinity College. For his contributions to welfare economics, he received the 1998 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences as well as the 1999 Bharat Ratna from India. The German Publishers and Booksellers Association presented him with the 2020 German Book Peace Prize.
Poverty & Famines: An Essay on Entitlement and Deprivation, which he published in 1981, was a major work, but Sen has written a great deal during his career. Sen has since become a well-known writer of numerous works on welfare economics, development economics, and other topics. Other fields of study include gender studies, moral and political philosophy, public health, economic measurement, rationality and economic behavior, economic methodology, social choice theory, and the economics of war and peace.
Amartya Sen was a significant contributor to the capabilities approach to development economics, which is a famous example of his concepts.
A theoretical framework called the capabilities approach has been used to guide initiatives to encourage economic growth and reduce poverty. The capabilities approach, in addition to being of academic interest, has influenced the development of new statistical indices that assist governments and policymakers in tracking the wellbeing of citizens in a more accurate and suitable manner.
