Ghatotkacha had always been a faithful son of the Pandavas. Born due to the union of Bhima and Hidimba, he was actually the eldest amongst the sons of the Pandavas.
When asking for his kavach and kundal, Karn used his shakti astra, which he received from God Indra, as a blessing. Karna gives Indra his kavach and kundal even though he is aware that Indra is asking them to protect Arjun. And as a result of Karna’s actions, Indra was overjoyed and gave Karna his shakti Astra for single use.
Due to Dhurdhyon’s request, Karna used the shakti astra that he had been holding back to kill Arjun instead of Ghatotkach.
