After going unbeaten in the group stages of the 2022 Asia Cup, where Pakistan and Hong Kong were dispatched off, India entered the Super–4 stage of the tournament and a mouthwatering rematch against Pakistan was India’s first challenge.
India were sent in to bat by Pakistan, and the openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul got India off to a flyer with some aggressive stroke-making, taking India to the 50-run mark in just 4.2 overs. However, they couldn’t build on their starts and fell in quick succession trying to continue their attacking impetus.
It then fell to Virat Kohli to glue the innings together as wickets fell around him cheaply as the middle order was guilty of some poor shot selection as it felt the need to continue the attacking onslaught. Thus, despite scoring 93 runs in the first 10 overs, India’s regular fall of wickets meant that the 200-run mark was missed and India had to defend a total of 181 instead.
The Indian bowlers scalped the dangerous Babar Azam in the early phases of the run chase and Fakhar Zaman soon followed his captain back to the pavilion, but opener Mohammad Rizwan who finished with 71 runs of 51 balls and Mohammad Nawaz who scored an explosive 42 from just 20 balls took the game away from India and led Pakistan to the latter stages of the game with a fighting chance of victory.
It was thus Asif Ali, whose sitter had been dropped by Arshdeep Singh when he was still not off the mark, and Khushdil Shah who brought the men-in-green home with a ball to spare with some big hits in the last 2 overs- when Pakistan had needed 26 runs to win.
