Prateek Kuhad is out with a new video and refreshing rendition of one of his earlier, one of the lesser-known songs ‘Kasoor’. The video of the song is heartwarming and the best part about it is that it features celebrities like Jim Sarb, Shamoon Ismail along with Kuhad fans.

While the fans of Kuhad have known his indie-folk style right from 2013 and before, his fan following peaked post the release of Cold/Mess. The song went on to become a block-buster globally and even became former US President Barack Obama’s favourite.

While Kuhad is now a popular voice from Indian indie scenes, there are many hidden gems not many people know about. Here’s a list of artists you should give a listen to, if you are a fan of Kuhad’s singing style and form of writing.

Anuv Jain

Born and bright up in Ludhiana Punjab, this 25-year-old singer has a deep, melancholic voice. His songs Ocean, Riha and Baareshein talk about love and separation. In one of his Ted Talks, Anuc shared his experience of falling in love with music and how writing songs became his coping mechanism to deal with sadness.

Parekh & Singh

If you love aesthetics as much as the treatment of the songs, you must listen to. This dream pop duo hails from Kolkata and consists of Nischay Parekh (vocals, guitar, synths) and Jivraj Singh (drums, electronics).  Their debut album was released in 2013, and since the duo has stood out with their vocals and Wes Anderson-like visuals.

Bharat Chauhan

Another voice that converse wll in the melancholy is New Delhi singer-songwriter Bharat Chauhan. His songs, Tinke, Tu Hoti Toh and Ghar play hide and seek with your emotions. The finger-picking style, combined with the husky voice of Chauhan make you reminisce about love with all its beauty and ugliness.

Taba Chake

If you are into tribal folk soothing music, Taba Chake is your guy.  A finger-style guitar player, Taba hails from a small town called Doimukh in Arunachal Pradesh. Having grown up in a Nyishi tribal family, his music is inspired by tribal folklore, birds and nature. His  songs do take you on a feels trip with upbeat tunes and dream-like vocals.

When Chai Met Toast

Based in Kochi, this indie folk-rock group has earned a substantial and loyal fan base over the years. When Chai Met Toast’s songs are inspired by rock and are mainly in English with a verse or two in Tamil. All their songs transcend moods be it a long drive or a quarantine music session.

The independent music scene in India is a niche strata that needs more recognition and with Kuhad’s popularity on the international and national front, it’s time the parallel music artists get their due.
