Mark Stewart, the Pop Group frontman died in the early hours of Friday morning, according to a statement by Mute Records.

‘Mute is deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend, fellow agitator, and creative force of nature, Mark Stewart,’ it stated.

“In honor of this original, fearless, sensitive, artistic, and funny man, think for yourself and question everything. The world was changed because of Mark Stewart, it will never be the same without him,” the statement added.

Cause of death

Mark Stewart’s cause of death was not revealed.

Age

Mark Stewart was born on August 10, 1960, in Bristol, England. He was 62 years old.

The Pop Group’s legacy

Stewart was a pioneer of post-punk and industrial hip-hop after starting The Pop Group alongside John Waddington, Simon Underwood, Gareth Sager, and Bruce Smith. The band released two albums, Y in 1979, and For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? in 1980.

The Pop Group separated in 1981 and later reunited in 2010 with Steward, Gareth, and Bruce for a series of live performances. Stewart’s last performance with the band was in the ruins of Coventry Cathedral in 2021, at the invitation of Terry Hall of Coventry UK City of Culture.

In 2014, the group released the compilation We Are Time and a brand new studio album Citizen Zombie in 2015. They released the final album in 2016 titled Honeymoon on Mars.

Solo Career

After splitting from The Pop Group, Stewart continued to collaborate on solo releases as Mark Stewart and the Maffia, which increased his interest in dub. Starting with the 1985 album As the Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade, he also worked on US hip-hop by using a backing band with drummer Keith LeBlanc, bassist Doug Wimbish, and guitarist Skip McDonald.

In 1987, his self-titled solo album featured contributions from the late Ryuichi Sakamoto and music by Erik Satie. He released two more albums, Metatron in 1990 and Control Data in 1996. He collaborated with several artists including Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie and experimental filmmaker Kenneth Anger on his final solo album, 2012’s The Politics of Envy.
