Ponniyin Selvan is an Indian Tamil-language epic period action film, directed by Mani Ratnam and written by Elango Kumaravel and B Jeyamohan. This film is an adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan, and it is produced by Mani Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah under the banners of Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.

Starting from November 4, Ponniyin Selvan can be rented for a week for Rs 199, after which Amazon Prime Video users can stream it without any charges. The film will also be accessible for streaming in four languages besides Hindi on the OTT platform. 

Cast 

The ensemble cast of Ponniyin Selvan includes Prakash Raj, Lal, R. Parthiban, R. Sarathkumar, Rahman, Vikram Prabhu, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Jayaram, Trisha, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Vikram.

This film by Mani Ratnam is the fourth movie collaboration with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. She will be seen playing both Aditha Karikalan’s love interest and Nanidi, a Pazhuvoor queen who was Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar’s wife.

Plot  

The film Ponniyin Selvan is based on the historical fiction work of the same name by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The story takes place in 969 AD and depicts Pandiyas promising to make the royals bleed and the chieftains of the  Chola Empire also plot for an insurrection.

Filming Location

The major filming for the project began on December 11, 2019, in Krabi, Kanchanaburi, and in some other locations of Thailand and the film had  40-days of initial shooting schedule.

On February 3, 2020, the second schedule of filming began in Hyderabad. The shooting was halted for around six months during the pandemic and the third schedule for filming took place in Srilanka from September 2020. 

Budget 

The two-part franchise is one the highest budget films made in  India. This film has a production cost of five billion rupees and the OTT streaming rights costs around Rs 125 crore.
