The 46th season of the ‘Saturday Night Live’ kicked off on October 3 with the first US Presidential debate prior to the elections as its focus. Alec Baldwin was back playing US President Donald Trump, and Jim Carrey took up the role of democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

The latest season of the SNL premiered two days after Trump tested positive for coronavirus and was subsequently moved to the hospital for treatment. “We thought it was important to see it again, since it might be the only presidential debate,” a statement read as the show opened, adding, “And it was pretty fun to watch as long as you don’t live in America.”

Beck Bennett, who played moderator Chris Wallace, asked Baldwin’s Trump “You did take the COVID test you promised you’d take in advance?”

Trump was tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday, two days after the presidential debate was held.

“Absolutely, scout’s honor,” he replied, while holding up two fingers which were crossed.

Maya Rudolph, too, made an appearance as vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

With several moments of sarcasm in the middle, the sketch came to an end with Carrey’s Biden taking out a television remote and pausing Baldwin’s Trump mid-speech, in a bid to talk to the people of the US directly. In the original debate, Trump was seen cutting Biden’s arguments several times.

“I think we all needed a break. Isn’t that satisfying? Just not to hear his voice for a single goddamned second. Let’s wallow in it. Let’s bask in the Trump-lessness,” he said.

“America, look at me. Look directly into my eyeballs. You can trust me because I believe in science and karma. Now just imagine if science and karma could some team up to send us all a message about how dangerous this virus can be,” Carrey’s Biden added.

The Saturday Night Live airs on television channel NBC every Saturday at 11:30 pm local time.
