At the first-ever auction of the now-antiquated video format in the United States, a sealed VHS tape of the 1985 blockbuster Back To The Future just sold for $75,000, or more than Rs. 58 lakh.

The winning offer for the 1986 VHS tape of Back To The Future from the collection of actor Tom Wilson, who portrayed Biff Tannen in the trilogy, was the most costly ever auctioned, according to Heritage Auctions of Texas.

The Back To The Future star is always trading in some very valuable memorabilia, whether it’s the Grays Sports Almanac or a near-mint vintage copy of the sci-fi film.

The tape, which is still in its original shrink wrap, is designed to transport its owner back to the 1980s as if they were speeding beyond 88 mph in Dr. Emmett Brown’s legendary DeLorean time machine.

In the auction, which comprised 260 sealed VHS cassettes of movies from the 1970s and 1980s, it was sold among other ancient copies from Wilson’s Back To The Future collection.

“This is a VHS tape of the original release of Back to the Future, provided to me by the studio at the time,” Biff wrote on the VHS tape, which sold for a record price of Rs. 58.53 lakh. I kept the VHS platform for later since I figured it would be around forever, and now I can’t locate a VCR. But, oh well. Enjoy!”

Wilson’s Back To The Future II VHS sold for $16,250, while his Back To The Future III VHS went for $13,750. A $10,000 auction was held for a 1990 Back To The Future boxed set that the actor previously owned.

“It was practically impossible for me to open this, to open the shrink wrap, since it includes not only Back to the Future I and II and—mint—but also the documentary Secrets of the Back to the Future Trilogy,” he remarked.
