Sinead O’Connor’s son died at the age of 17 after he was reported missing two days back. The singer, known for her mellifluous rendition of ‘Danny Boy’, took to social media to share the news, saying that her son had “decided to end his earthly struggle”. She implored others to not follow his example. 

In her message, she wrote “My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God. May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace.”

She also took the opportunity to air her grievances saying, “26 hours after my son died in the so called care of the Irish State in the form of Tusla, I have yet to receive any contact from Tusla or their representatives. I was informed by Gardai of my son’s death and later I spoke with the GAL. No contact from Tusla is unacceptable.”

The police confirmed Shane’s death on Saturday, January 8.

When Shane went missing, Sinead O’Connor’s reaction went from imploring her son to return, to threatening lawsuits against the Tallaght Hospital. She said, “Like, how has a seventeen year old traumatised young person WHO WAS ON SUICIDE WATCH in Tallaght Hosptial’s Lynn Ward been able to go missing??? Hospital of course so far refusing to take any responsibility. Anything happens to my son on their watch? Lawsuits.”

Notably, her son had gone missing since January 6, with the Gardai launching a search to find him. The boy went missing from Newbridge, County Kildare. He was last seen at Tallaght, Dublin 24 area. At the time, officers made an appeal expressing concern about his welfare.

Sinead O’Connor was also of the same opinion, saying “This is a message for my son, Shane. Shane, it’s not funny any more all this going missing. You are scaring the crap out of me. Could you please do the right thing and present yourself at a Gardai station. If you are with Shane please call the Gardai for his safety.”

After Shane’s body was recovered, the missing person search was called off. While Sinead O’Connor has received several wishes of condolence on social media, she herself has made a sentimental post for her son, who she called “light of my life”. 

She assured him that they’d always be together and nothing could separate them.
