Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello shocked their fans after confirming on Monday that the couple were calling it quits on their seven years of marriage. Now experts are saying that her drinking and lifestyle choices might have played a big role in the couple getting a divorce.

The Modern Family star and the Magic Mike alum announced that they had “made the difficult decision to divorce” but still “love and care for one another.”

Sobriety experts told Daily Mail that Vergara and Manganiello had drastically different lifestyles and the latter’s sobriety may have played a major part in the breakdown of his marriage. Manganiello has had problems with alcohol addiction and was warned against getting into a relationship with someone who was not actively sober.

“Of course the fact that Sofia is not sober had an impact on their marriage,” an insider revealed. “He was warned about this when he started sating her and again before marrying her. He did not think that he was going to change her but he also didn’t think about the implications this could have on their marriage.”

Another source told the publication that despite sharing photos of herself drinking on multiple occasions on social media, Vergara was extremely supportive of her husband’s sobriety. However, experts are of the opinion that a relationship between a sober person and someone who consumes alcohol rarely work, no matter how support one is of the other person’s sobriety.

Manganiello quit alcohol back in 2002 and by the time he met Vergara, he had been 12 years sober. He also talked about his sobriety in a 2019 interview. The actor candidly said that he turned alcohol to avoid dealing with her problems. As a result, he eventually became broken beyond repair at some point.

Katrina Patersen, an addiction specialist and nurse from Dallas, Texas, said she thought Manganiello and Vergara’s marriage was “doomed to fail from the start.” She also mentioned that the actor must have had to fight that much harder to keep sober after being married to someone who consumes alcohol.

The couple has not disclosed their reason for divorce publicly.
