New episodes of Netflix‘s hit sci-fi adventure series “Stranger Things” will be released “coming soon enough,” according to the show’s executive producer and director Shawn Levy.

The last season premiered on July 4, 2019, more than two years ago.

“I shot in Lithuania right before the pandemic. We have filmed in Georgia, Lithuania, and New Mexico, so suffice to say Season 4 is sprawling,” Levy told Variety. “It’s visually and narratively very ambitious, much more ambitious than the prior three seasons.”

“The delay is due in large measure to COVID and the pace at which we have to work to do so safely, but it also happens to be the season that we chose to go much bigger,” Levy explained in the new interview. “It’s the season’s scale and the multi-settings of season four.”

The fourth season’s cast and crew had already begun filming before the COVID-19 pandemic. Production was halted for a time before restarting in October with new safety guidelines in place.

A few teasers for the upcoming season have already been released, but there hasn’t been much new footage to go on (aside from the confirmation of Hopper’s return after “dying” in the season three finale).

According to Variety, Levy will make an announcement about season four “quite soon,” so a full-length trailer and premiere date reveal aren’t too far away.

A teaser trailer released in May gave audiences a taste of what was to come, revealing that things had gone awry since the Season 3 finale. For one thing, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) appears to be locked behind a locked door in the very sort of institution where she was raised.

Eleven, are you listening?” asks a voice, causing her eyes to widen. The voice is assumed to be that of Papa, a.k.a. Dr Martin Brenner, a former scientist at the US Department of Energy who raised test subjects, including Eleven, at Hawkins Lab.

Season two of “Stranger Things” debuted on Halloween, and season three was released on July 4th. Will Netflix release another holiday special, perhaps for Thanksgiving or Christmas in 2021? According to Levy, we’ll find out soon enough.
