The band Alabama’s founding musician Teddy Gentry was detained on Monday and charged with a misdemeanour narcotics crime in the state that bears the band’s name, according to jail records. Alabama is a Grammy-winning country band.

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama, Gentry, 70, was arrested on suspicion of unlawful possession of marijuana in the second degree and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Records revealed on Monday he was admitted into the Cherokee County Detention Facility at 10: 28 am and was let go at 11:06 am.

Tuesday, phone numbers associated with Gentry’s Fort Payne residence in neighbouring DeKalb County could not immediately reach him for comment.
A spokesperson for Gentry and the band said on Tuesday that they wouldn’t comment on the situation but noted that the arrest won’t have any bearing on their upcoming tour.

On September 23, they will perform in Denver’s Ball Arena. One of the first states to legalise marijuana use for recreational purposes was Colorado.
Alabama has been performing for many years, but its popularity peaked in the early and middle 1980s when it won three consecutive Country Music Awards for vocal group of the year between 1981 and 1983.

For The Closer You Get, they won the CMA album of the year award in 1983. In 1984, the trio won a Grammy for best country performance by a duo or group for the song. Alabama won in the same category for Mountain Music the year before.
In 2005, the group was admitted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
