The Gray Man‘ tells the story of CIA asset Sierra Six, who goes rogue and absconds with incriminating information on a senior CIA official. This triggers a search, led by a sociopathic former agent, Chris Evans’ Lloyd Hansen. The cat and mouse game quickly involves Six’s recruiter and father-figure Fitzroy and his niece, with whom the assassin shares a previous protective bond.

The movie ends with Six breaking out of a secure medical facility, where he’d been kept under observation after orders from Suzanne Brewer, a CIA agent. He tracks down Claire, Fitzroy’s niece, and takes out all the agents at the secure facility where she’s being held. The two drive away as the credits roll.

While no official ‘The Gray Man’ sequel has been greenlit by Netflix yet, the Russo brothers have expressed an interest in keeping the universe going. “It is based on a book series, so there is the opportunity to expand in a sense in future movies. We love to keep going with our world because we love our characters”, the duo noted at the press conference for the film’s promotion in Mumbai.

Six most likely retires from his work as a CIA assassin, with his new responsibility of taking care of Claire. However, ‘The Gray Man’ leaves some loose ends, which could be taken up in a sequel.

Throughout the movie, we learn about the presence of the old man, who seems to be someone high up in the Central Intelligence Agency, or the American government. This man helps cover up Denny Carmichael’s unsanctioned missions. He is an authority figure invoking fear when viewers are told of the time he left a body floating in the Potomac.

By the end of the film, Carmichael and Suzanne are both exonerated and Six is nowhere close to uncovering the identity of the old man. These could all come into play in ‘The Gray Man 2’, if it were to be made.

Considering Ana de Armas’ Dani Miranda and Dhanush’s Lone Wolf are both interesting characters, one as a CIA agent and the other as a Tamil assassin, they could get their spinoffs as well, continuing the universe of ‘The Gray Man’.
