The First Family of the United States– President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden— welcomed the “newest Biden” at the White House on Monday. The family brought home a pet dog, who has been named Commander.

Commander, a German Shephard, was seen playing on the South Lawn of the White House on Monday afternoon. The new pet was given to Joe Biden as a gift, according to reports from CNN citing unnamed sources.

Joe Biden also posted about the newest member of his family, captioning it “Welcome to the White House, Commander.”

Commander’s entry to the White House has been gathering a flurry of social media reactions. While some people wished the First Family a “happy time” with the new pet, others shared pictures of their own dogs.

“So cute, love him! Hope Major and Commander get along well”, a Twitter user wrote. Another one wrote, “Oh Commander is so cute. My experience as a dog owner for the first time in my life this past year–owning a dog makes one a better person and relates to other people better. It’s great that we have a president who loves animals and pets.”

The Bidens lost their pet dog Champ, also a German Shephard, earlier this year in June. He was 13 years old. Nearly a month before that former President Barack Obama’s pet dog Bo-– a Portuguese water dog– also died.

A statement released jointly by the President and First Lady read, “Our hearts are heavy today as we let you all know that our beloved German Shepherd, Champ, passed away peacefully at home. He was our constant, cherished companion during the last 13 years and was adored by the entire Biden family.”
