The word minion is derived from the term “mignon” which means darling or someone who is very popular.  Those goggles and blue overalls that Minions wear have become a part of popular culture.

Minions were first used in the computer-animated film named  ‘Despicable Me’ in 2010. Soon after their huge popularity, in the year 2015, the origin story of the minions came up as a film. It was titled ‘Minions.’ People and children started liking the character so much that in the next year in 2016 it became the official mascot of Universal Studios.

Minions were created by a team that consisted of character designers Eric Guillon and Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud as director of the film “Despicable Me”.  According to them, the fossil history says that Minions were small human factory workers.

As the story of the film progressed, Minions started evolving from human workers morphed into robots. The idea of such human-morphed robots was that they could be more innocent. The filmmakers and team settled on a combination of making Minions in human-like form but with a pinch of robotic look in it. They made minions more relatable, closer to unique, wide-eyed, and with innocence at heart.

Where did they come from? Apart from the genealogy and fossil evolution, character designers and film directors of “Despicable Me” have shown them emerging out of the oceans just like other organisms came to this great earth.

Not only does the simple innocent beauty of minions draw us towards the character but their cute high pitched voice adds more  to the character. These voice characteristics are a result of voice modulation or sometimes many people claim that the director might have been inspired from Jawas or Oompa Loompa in Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

Apart from its cute voice, Minions speak in a very gibberish way that is not possible for anyone to understand. The animation makes all of its work so well that we are still in awe of Minions. Minions’ gibberish way of speaking has been a constraint for Illusion Production but the beautiful animation makes it stand out among the other popular Disney and Pixar characters.

The internet age has triggered Minions popularity. It can be seen everywhere from a coffee mug to a T-shirt, in a What’s App chat or a sticker in a Facebook comment. People have loved minions and now they are an indispensable part of popular culture.
