The highly anticipated The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power from Amazon will be a completely new exploration of the world of Middle-Earth. J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings span thousands of years in the history of this fictional world, providing the creative team with a wealth of material to work with.
Amazon revealed in March 2019 that The Rings of Power would be set in the Second Age of Middle-earth via a pair of tweets depicting a Second Age-era map and the simple phrase “Welcome to the Second Age.”
Tolkien fans will recognise this setting as thousands of years before the events of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, during a period of great turmoil in Middle-earth.

Because it takes place so long before the trilogy, you won’t see many of the characters you already know and love. There is no Frodo, Samwise, Aragorn, or Éowyn. That doesn’t mean there won’t be any familiar names or faces there! Galadriel, the royal elf seen as an ethereal and ancient being in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, will be one of the series’ main characters. She’s thousands of years younger here, trying to warn of impending dangers that no one else seems to notice. Elrond, another important elf character from the original trilogy, also has a significant role in the new series.
The most important part of this era is the act that defines Middle-later earth’s adventures: the forging of the Rings of Power.
The Rings of Power is based on Tolkien’s work, but not in standalone novels. Instead, the majority of the information is drawn from his Lord of the Rings novels’ lengthy and dense appendices. The Amazon series will be inspired by these appendices, which contain detailed histories of the Second Age.
How additional Tolkien texts will be used into the show and how much of it will be original material are less certain. The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales, which cover many thousand years of Middle-earth history, are just two examples of Tolkien’s historical prequels.
These books, not simply the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, discuss some aspects of the programme that have already been established, such as the history of Nmenor.

The show is slated to release on September 2, 2022, on Amazon Prime Video.
Although Amazon hasn’t explicitly stated that a second season of the programme is in the works, there are enough industry rumours to make the situation rather obvious.
Amazon has a first-season budget of $450 million, making it the most expensive television programme ever produced.
