House of the Dragon is a prequel to Game of Thrones. The second episode of the series premiered on August 28, 2022, in the US and was available to watch in India on August 29, 2022. House of the Dragon is based on the novel Fire and Blood by George R.R Martin. The series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to and covering the Targaryen war of succession known as the Dance of the Dragons.

1. Rome 

The HBO series, Rome ran for two seasons. It covers the exact sort of history that House of the Dragon has. Rome’s first season follows the rise of Julius Caesar from general to dictator for life and his eventful unfortunate luck on the Ides of March. The second season covers the three-way clash for control between Cleopatra, Mark Anthony and Caesar’s nephew Augustus.

2. Vikings 

The series follows the sagas of Ragnar Lothbrok, a legendary figure of Norse poetry. Ragnar is brought to life by Australian actor Travis Fimmel. Ragnar is a scourge to the coasts of medieval England and France, launching raids. The show witnesses multiple time jumps, eventually showing Ragnar’s sons as they attempt to take over his kingdom. The show has a spinoff named Vikings: Valhalla. 

3. The Great 

The Great takes an anti-historical look at the rise to power of Catherine the Great. Elle Fanning stars as Catherine, opposite Nicholas Hoult as her husband, the emperor Peter III of Russia. The show also covers the great Gillian Anderson spicing things up as an extended guest arc as Catherine’s mother that leaves history even further behind in its absurd plot twists. 

4. Outlander 

Outlander is set in 1700s Scotland, with the clan and traditions that The North in Game of Thrones is modelled after. Caitriona Balfe plays the role of a nurse who travels 200 years back via mystical stone. Her ability to time travel is actually genetic. The show also stars Sam Heughan.

5. Game of Thrones 

Game of Thrones is the sequel to House of Dragon. The series follows life on the medieval continent of Westeros. Different houses throughout the continent are trying to seize power by claiming the throne independently. The series has received 59 Primetime Emmy Awards. It has also received five nominations for the Golden Globe Award for the Best Television Series, Drama.
