The Weeknd made headlines on Saturday night, September 4, 2022, when he cancelled his concert at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California. The Canadian singer lost his voice in the middle of his first song the night, Can’t Feel My Face when he lost his voice, which resulted in him cancelling the rest of the concert.

“I can’t give you the concert I want to give you. I’m going to make sure everyone’s good, gets your money back, and I’ll do a show real soon for you guys, but I wanted to come out and personally apologize and not tweet it or Instagram it,” he later said.

“I wanted you guys to know that I can’t give you what I want to give you. I apologize. I’m so sorry,” The Weeknd added.

Who is The Weeknd?

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, popularly known as The Weeknd, was born on February 16, 1990, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is a Canadian singer and songwriter, known widely for his escapism in music, the majority of which is inspired by his personal experiences over the years.

The singer has won several awards in his career, which include four Grammy Awards, 17 Juno Awards, 20 Billboard Music Awards and others.

Abel is the only child of Makkonen Tesfaye and Samrawit Hailu, both of whom are Ethiopian immigrants to Canada. His parents divorced shortly after he was born and was brought up by his mother and grandmother.

He is fluent in Amharic, which is also his mother tongue that he learnt from his grandmother. Apart from that, he is also fluent in English and French, both of which are the official languages of Canada.

He dropped out of school when he was 17, and moved to an apartment in Parkdale with two more friends. Later, he also went through homelessness and was even locked up several times. He became a drug addict at this time but became sober after 2021.

His music career began with YouTube, where he released his music anonymously. However, he later adopted the name The Weeknd and released his first mixtape in 2011. His first live performance came in July 2011, when he performed at the Mod Club Theatre.

Since then, he has gone on to release several albums and singles. His music has been used in many popular films, including The Hunger Games. Some of his best albums are Kiss Land, My Dear Melancholy, After Hours and House of Balloons.
