He was raised in Sacramento, where he started his musical career at a young age. He began playing with the folk trio Tim, Tom & Ron when he was 15 years old.

Timothy B. Schmit tried out for Poco in 1968 but was not chosen because of Randy Meisner, a founding member. Schmit, however, received his chance to shine when Meisner departed the group in 1969, and he joined Poco as the new bassist and vocalist. Schmit contributed significantly to the band’s output over the years, appearing on two live albums and nine studio albums between 1969 and 1977.

Schmit replaced Randy Meisner on bass and vocals in the Eagles in 1977 after the Hotel California tour, just as he had done in Poco when Meisner left. Schmit is the only member of the Eagles who is genuinely a California native, despite the band’s reputation as being synonymous with the Golden State.
