The bassist of the band ZZ Top Dusty Hill died at his home on Wednesday, the band announced on their Facebook page. Hill was 72.

The band did not give out a cause of death, but said that Hill died in his sleep. “We are saddened by the news today that our Compadre, Dusty Hill, has passed away in his sleep at home in Houston, TX. We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world, will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the ‘Top’,” said the post written by guitarist Billy Gibbons and drummer Frank Beard. Hill had recently suffered a hip injury.

Hill was born in Dallas in 1949 as Joe Michael Hill. The bearded trio from Texas – Hill, Gibbons and Beard released their first single in 1969. ZZ Top was formed after Gibbons’ previous band ‘Moving Sidewalks’ sunk into the ground. ZZ Top held its first concert in 1970, the same year when they released their first album.

Over the years, the trio produced 15 chart-topping albums. Their best-known hits are ‘Legs’ and ‘Gimme all your Lovin’.

In 2004, Hill, along with Gibbons and Beard, was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame. Along with being the bassist, Hill also sung lead and backing vocals for ZZ Top. He also played the keyboard for the band.

His acting career did not last long, but he did make cameos in ‘Back to the Future III’ and ‘Deadwood’. In the movie ‘King of the Hill’, he played himself.

Hill also accidentally shot himself in 1984. Years later, he joked about the incident in an interview in 2016. “My first reaction was ‘Shit!’ and then ‘Ouch’. I couldn’t believe I’d done something so stupid. To this day, I don’t know how I could do it,” he was quoted as saying by the Guardian.
