Irish Grinstead had an identical twin sister, Orish, who was a singer and former member of the popular 1990s R&B girl group 702. She died on April 20, 2008, at the young age of 27.

On Saturday, Irish’s death was announced by her sister and fellow group member, Lemisha Grinstead on Instagram.

“It is with great sadness that I have to let you know that my beautiful sister and friend has passed away this evening,” the post read. “She has had a long battle and she is finally at peace. That girl was as bright as the stars! She was not only beautiful on the outside, but also within. Sharing the stage with her was a joy I will cherish for the rest of my life! We, the family ask for prayers and respect for our privacy as we grieve an outstanding loss to our family.”

Who was Orish Grinstead?

Orish Grinstead was born on June 2, 1980, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Orish was part of the original lineup of 702, along with her sisters Irish and Lemisha Grinstead and Amelia Childs. She was part of the production of their first album.

She left the group even before they made their official debut. She became a substitute group member who would fill in for the other members when they were absent. This included the time when Lemisha was pregnant with her son.

Orish also worked on a solo music career. She died in April 2008 due to kidney failure. She also battled with other illnesses, including cancer. She had been suffering from various illnesses for a long time before her death. Since some of them were chronic in nature, she wasn’t expected to recover.

Speaking with ABC in 2021, Irish and Lemisha opened up about the experience of losing Orish. She said that her death upended the “dynamic” of their family as the trio were “literally like triplets.”

“It was hard for me to hold that in for so long, and it was kind of relieving to be able to speak about it and to finally let it out my heart,” Irish said.

Lemisha said, “I struggled with it just as equally, probably not as rough as Irish did, but it was just as bad for me losing Orish.”
