Eric “Rick” Froberg, a seasoned San Diego musician and visual artist best known for his work as the guitarist and lead vocalist with the band Drive Like Jehu, has passed away, according to a bandmate. He was 55 years old at the time of his death.

According to guitarist John Reis’ Instagram post from last night (Friday), Rick passed away unexpectedly from natural causes. “His art made life better. The only thing he loved more than art and rock n roll was his friends. He will forever be remembered for his creativity, vision, and his ability to bring beauty into this world. I love you, Rick. I will miss you for the rest of my life.”

Who was Rick Froberg?

Rick Froberg was an American musician, singer, and visual artist. He was born in Encinitas, California, on February 20, 1968. Froberg was most known for his contributions as a vocalist and lyricist for various important rock bands.

Drive Like Jehu, a significant post-hardcore band founded in San Diego in 1990, was one of Froberg’s initial prominent endeavors. “Yank Crime” (1994) and “Drive Like Jehu” (1991) are two highly praised albums that were released by Drive Like Jehu. The band’s music, which incorporated punk, post-hardcore, and alternative rock elements, was distinguished by its intricate guitar playing, complicated rhythms, and fervent vocals.

After Drive Like Jehu disbanded in 1995, Froberg went on to form another critically acclaimed band called Hot Snakes in 1999. With Hot Snakes, he continued to explore a raw and energetic punk rock sound. The band released several albums, including “Automatic Midnight” (2000), “Audit in Progress” (2004), and “Jericho Sirens” (2018).

Apart from Hot Snakes, Froberg had been involved in various other musical projects. He fronted the garage rock band The Obits from 2006 to 2013, releasing three albums during their existence. Froberg had also collaborated with musicians like John Reis, his bandmate from Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes, in the band Night Marchers.

2018 saw the release of “Jericho Sirens” with Hot Snakes, his most recent album. Although his band Obits disbanded in 2015, the live album “Die At the Zoo” was published in 2021. It was recorded in Brisbane, Australia in 2012 during the band’s tour.

In addition to his music career, Froberg is known for his visual art, often creating the cover artwork for his bands’ albums. He has exhibited his artwork in various galleries.
