Irish Singer Sinéad O’Connor died at the age of 56. She became a college-rock hit with the release of her debut album, “The Lion and the Cobra.” However, it wasn’t until 1990 that she unexpectedly became a global success and a pop star on MTV thanks to her stunning cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

Prince and Sinéad O’Connor controversy

Prince composed the song “Nothing Compares 2 U” in 1984 for The Family, a funk group client of his record company. The Family’s original recording did not garner a lot of attention at the time. However, Sinéad O’Connor’s cover of the song in 1990 is what first made it well-known to the general public.

O’Connor’s cover of “Nothing Compares 2 U” became a huge smash and catapulted her to international fame. Due to the song’s popularity, O’Connor developed a troubled relationship with the song itself.

In the open, Prince applauded Sinéad O’Connor for her performance and rendition of “Nothing Compares 2 U.” He complimented her performance, stating, “I love it, it’s wonderful! I try to see a cosmic purpose in everything.”

O’Connor admitted that, despite Prince’s public declarations to the contrary, success with the single seemed to irk him when they were alone. She added that Prince normally didn’t enjoy it when other musicians covered his songs and that their strained relationship may have been a result of the enormous popularity of her rendition.

Sinéad O’Connor went on to say that there were other factors at play in the tense relationship she had with Prince. First off, O’Connor wasn’t one of Prince’s female proteges, and it seemed to concern him that she wasn’t.
