India reported 1,07,474 new COVID-19 infections in the past 24 hours, a decrease of 20,478 in comparison to last day’s tally.
While the daily positivity rate a day earlier was 7.9%, it dipped to 7.4% as per figures released on Sunday.
In terms of statewide distribution of the new infections, Kerala was top with 33,538 cases, followed by Karnataka with 12,009 cases, and Maharashtra with 11,394 cases. All other states recorded figures below 10,000.

The daily death toll has also decreased, and 865 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours as opposed to 1,051 deaths a day earlier.
The country also reported 2,13,246 recoveries in the last 24 hours, slightly lower than the 2,30,814 recoveries reported a day earlier.
Along with the decrease in cases, vaccination numbers have also gone up. The total number of vaccinations in the country now stand at an impressive 1,69,46,26,697.

The latest figures puts India’s tally of active cases at 12,25,011, which has gone down by 1,06,637 in comparison to the tally a day earlier.
The total death toll since the start of the pandemic now stands at 5,01,979.
With the daily positivity rate going down, experts believe that India has seen the worst of the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While over one lakh new cases are still being reported everyday, courtesy of the highly-transmissible omicron variant that has become the dominant strain, the severity of the illness has relatively declined, and respiratory symptoms are not as widespread anymore.
The consequent decline in hospitalisations have given India’s healthcare system a much needed breather after the chaos of the initial stages of the pandemic.
