“We succeeded at slowing down the spread of coronavirus earlier,” Uddhav Thackeray said, while addressing the public on Friday. He said, “I am here to find solutions.”

“I cannot rule out imposing a lockdown if the current COVID-19 situation prevails. People have become complacent,” the Maharashtra CM said. He added that in a couple of days strict measures would be announced to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Thackeray said, “In the coming days, we aim to conduct 2.5 lakh RT-PCR tests daily.”

The Maharashtra CM said that the situation of coronavirus is worse in the state since March than the last year. “When we dropped our guard, cases doubled and tripled,” Thackeray said.

“Till now, we have administered 65 lakh COVID19 vaccine doses incl 3 lakh vaccine doses yesterday. Even after vaccination, some people are getting infected because they stop wearing masks,” the Shiv Sena leader said.

Thackeray said that there could be a shortage of healthcare infrastructure if the COVID-19 situation deteriorates in the state.

Maharashtra is witnessing a steep surge in the COVID-19 cases as on Thursday the state recorded over 43,000 coronavirus infections. Mumbai on Friday recorded over 8,000 COVID-19 cases.

Earlier in the day, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said, “Nobody wants a lockdown but considering the pace at which the virus cases are surging in the state and harping on the health infrastructure, strict measures will have to be taken.”
