Ahead of Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray‘s address to the state on Friday evening amid surging COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said that strict measures are likely to be taken to contain the spread of coronavirus in the state, reported ANI.

Hinting at a possible lockdown in the state Pendekar said, “Nobody wants a lockdown but considering the pace at which the virus cases are surging in the state and harping on the health infrastructure, strict measures will have to be taken.”

She also addressed the concern regarding the ever-rising COVID-19 surge in Mumbai, one of the worst coronavirus hit city of India, and shared that the city is also dealing with the shortage of beds and ventilators.

Pednekar also urged Mumbaikars to follow COVID-19 protocols and use masks.

Maharashtra on Thursday reported 43,183 new COVID-19 cases, this marks the highest single-day rise since the coronavirus pandemic began in March.

The state also witnessed 249 COVID deaths during the day, which is another record since October last year.

To share a future response plan and probably some new set of COVID-19 protocols to be implemented in the state, CM Uddhav Thackeray will address the state at 8:30 pm on Friday.
