A new Covid-19 variant is spreading throughout the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The strain, known as XBB.1.5, is said to be the cause of 41% of Covid cases that have been formally confirmed nationwide, according to their statistics. From only 21% seven days prior, the CDC discovered that the mutation had considerably grown during the past week.
According to CDC data, this strain, which was initially discovered in mid-November 2022, has supplanted the BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 variations, which predominated instances in the fall. The CDC reports that the northeastern US has seen the majority of cases of the XBB.1.5 strain, which is related to the XBB strain. More than 70% of Covid cases from New York to Maine are currently XBB.1.5.
In a recent interview with Reuters, University of Minnesota infectious disease expert Dr. Michael Osterholm said, “Ironically, arguably the worst version that the world is experiencing right now is actually XBB.” According to Andrew Pekosz, a virologist at Johns Hopkins University, the novel XBB.1.5 is different from previous members of its family due to an additional mutation that enhances its capacity to attach to cells.
“The virus needs to connect closely to cells to be more efficient at getting in and that could help the virus be a little bit more efficient at infecting individuals,” Pekosz reportedly stated. XBB.1.5 was more successful at attaching to cells through a critical receptor than XBB.1, a variation that was more immunological evasive, according to data released on Twitter by Yunlong Richard Cao, a researcher and assistant professor at Peking University. It also manages to avoid immune system defences.

Several experts have now referred to the XBB subvariants’ resistance to infection- and vaccination-related antibodies as “alarming”. They have stressed the fact that the majority of XBB subvariants, which were also very immune evasive, were more adept than the BQ subvariants at escaping protection from omicron boosters. The New York Post reports that 2,530 Americans died from the illness in the last week of 2022 as opposed to 17,048 Americans during the same time period in 2021.

The main medical advisor to the White House, Dr. Anthony Fauci, stated that the XBB subvariants significantly reduce the anti-infection protection that boosters provide in November 2022. However, it was not anticipated that the amount of hospitalisations brought on by COVID-19 would be as high as it was the last time. He said in a briefing in December 2022 that Singapore’s case study served as an inspiration. Singapore had a considerable rise in XBB variant infections but not a corresponding rise in hospitalisations. The new XBB. 1.5 strain, meanwhile, has been identified in at least 70 different nations, according to the WHO.
