Two policemen were killed after terrorists opened fire at security forces in Baghat Barzulla of Srinagar district in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. The officers were rushed to the hospital where they succumbed to serious injuries. The area was cordoned off following the attack and a search was underway for the attackers.
Confirming the news, Kashmir Zone Police tweeted, “Both the injured policemen, namely SgCT Mohammad Yousuf of Zurhama Kupwara and Ct Suhail Ahmad of Logripora Aishmuqa, attained martyrdom. We pay our rich tributes to the martyrs and standby their families at this crucial juncture.”
Vijay Kumar, IGP, Kashmir, said one LeT militant attacked the police personnel when they were at a shop today, ANI reported.
CCTV footage showed a gunman opening fire at the police personnel and fleeing the scene. The incident took place on a high-security airport road.
A wreath-laying ceremony of the martyred policemen was held on Friday evening.
Offering her condolences to the martyred policemen’s families, Peoples Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti tweeted, “Condemn the killing of two policemen in the Baghat attack. My heart goes out to their families & loved ones. This cycle of violence serves no cause & begets only misery.”
National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah too condemned the attack, tweeting, “Two police personnel have reportedly been killed in an attack in Srinagar today. I condemn this act of militant violence & send my condolences to the families of these brave men.”
“What makes this attack even more reprehensible is that SgCT Mohammad Yousuf of Zurhama and Ct Suhail Ahmad of Logripora were unarmed & shot in the back. Senseless & cowardly at the same time,” he added.
A delegation of foreign envoys from the European Union is currently in Srinagar to assess the situation over an year after the abrogation of Article 370.
