India on Thursday registered a 10-wicket win in the third Test over opponents England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, leading the 4-match series with a score of 2-1.

Rohit Sharma finished the match off in style, hitting a sixer and turning the score of 43 directly into a victory for the home side. The day was brightened up by left-handed spinner Axar Patel, who picked up a total of 11 wickets in the third Test, becoming the first bowler to do so in a Day-Night Test.

Fellow spinners Ravichandran Ashwin, too, on the same day became the fastest Indian bowler to pick up 400 Test wickets.

The match, in general, favoured spinners much more than fast bowlers.

The second innings on Thursday went considerably smoother for the hosts than their batting performance in the first half.

The opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill scored 25 and 15 runs each.

England bowlers were unable to take any wickets in India’s second innings.

This was quite the reverse of England’s early morning spells, as five wickets by captain Joe Root, alongside left-arm spinner Jack Leach, practically decimated the Indian batting line-up earlier in the day, limiting it to a total of 145 runs, which translated to a lead of 33 runs by India.

After valuable wickets of Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara were picked up by Leach late on Wednesday, attempts by Rohit Sharma to cement a first innings lead on Thursday went in vain, as the opener was picked off by Jack Leach via lbw, shortly followed by the entire middle order. The only batsmen to cross single digit in this phase were Ravichandran Ashwin and Ishant Sharma.

England’s second innings, too, followed the same path in a surprisingly similar manner, with Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Ollie Pope becoming the only names to cross into double digits with respective scores of 19, 25, and 12 in the second innings.

The second day of play resumed with India continuing their innings at 99/3, trailing England’s total score by 13 runs.

The hosts lost three of their wickets late on Wednesday, with Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara and skipper Virat Kohli being sent back to pavilion by the England bowling attack. Jack Leach took two wickets, whereas Jofra Archer took one.

Earlier on the first day, the spinner-duo of Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin had wreaked havoc on the England batting side, stunting it at a rather meagre score of 112 runs.
