An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 on the Richter scale hit Sonitpur, Assam at 2:23 PM on Sunday, ANI quoted National Center for Seismology.

The epicenter is located 40 km west of Tezpur in Assam’s Sonitpur district, National Center for Seismology confirmed. The depth of the earthquake was 16 km, it said.

Only last month, this area was jolted by an earthquake and both sides of the river Brahmaputra experienced more than 25 aftershocks.

The Assam government had its officials examine the impact of the last earthquake in order to prepare an effective mitigation roadmap for the future, HT Mint reports.
