The Duke
of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, died on Friday at the
Windsor Castle. Prince Philip was born on June 10, 1921 and would
have turned 100 this year. Prince Philip married Princess Elizabeth in November 1947,
less than five years before she became queen.

1. Prince Philip’s family was forced to flee Greece
Prince Philip’s
uncle, King Constantine of Greece, had to abdicate his throne in 1922. 18 months
old Prince Philip was smuggled to England through the connections to the
Mountbatten dynasty in England. He arrived to England in a fruit crate and
later he shifted to live with his aunt Marie Bonaparte in France.

2. Prince Philip knew
Queen Elizabeth before marriage
Prince Philip had
first met Queen Elizabeth when she was 13 years old. During a royal visit at
Dartmouth, Queen Elizabeth (Mother of the present queen), asked Prince Philip
if would chaperone her daughters Elizabeth and Margaret.
3. None of Prince Philip’s
sisters attended his wedding
Three surviving sister
of Prince Philip had married German nobles and because of the Anti-German rife
after the war, none of his sisters were allowed to attend his wedding.

first person of the British Royal member to be interviewed on television
Prince Philip was the
first member of the British royal family to be interviewed on the television.
He had appeared on the BBC’s flagship current affairs program ‘Panorama’, on
May 29, 1961.

5. Prince Philip is Tri
lingual
Prince Philip
understood certain amount of Greek but did not speak both, Greek and Danish,
