Ahead of the West Bengal Assembly election, veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty may join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), according to media reports. He is most likely to join the party during Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s visit to the state capital, Kolkata.
As per the reports, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat had met the 70-year-old actor last month and that’s how the speculation began.
Mithun is a former member of the Rajya Sabha. He was nominated to the Upper House of the Parliament by West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee in 2014. However, the actor resigned as a Rajya Sabha MP on December 26, 2016.
Trinamool Congress, on Friday, released its list of candidates, who will compete in the polls. BJP is yet to declare its list of candidates.
A total of 294 assembly constituencies will go to the polls. Polling for the West Bengal Assembly elections is scheduled to be held in eight phases starting from March 27. The last phase of voting will be conducted on April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 2.
