Amazon Quiz (September 13, 2021): He was nominated for which prize five times but never got it?
Options:
1) Oscar
2) Booker Prize
3) Nobel Prize
4) Pulitzer Prize
Answer: Nobel Prize
Mahatma Gandhi, who is often known as the flag bearer for India’s freedom struggle against the British, was nominated for the prestigious Nobel prize five times in his life. He was nominated in 1937, 1938, 1939, and 1947.
The Indian leader was nominated again the next year, in 1948, and was one of the top contenders for the accolade. However, days before the announcement, Gandhi was killed by Nathuram Godse on January 30th, 1948, according to media reports.
The removal of Gandhi’s name from the list of Nobel Prize winners left a deep impact on the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which decided that the award will not be given to any individual that year.
Setting aside the Nobel Prize, the Indian leader was also not presented with the country’s highest civilian honour, which is Bharat Ratna.
