Amazon Quiz (27th August 2021): In June 2021, National Geographic officially recognized what as the world’s fifth ocean?

(a) Southern Ocean

(b) Middle Ocean

(c) Glacier Ocean

(d) White Ocean

Answer: (a) Southern Ocean

On the occasion of ‘World Ocean Day’ (June 8), National Geographic
designated the Southern Ocean as the fifth ocean this year. The Southern Ocean
is a body of water that surrounds Antarctica. “The Southern Ocean has long been
recognized by scientists, but because there was never agreement
internationally, we never officially recognized it,” said National Geographic
Society Geographer Alex Tait.

According to Nat Geo, scientists argued whether the Southern Ocean was a
“cold, southern extension of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian
Oceans” or if it was just a “cold, southern extension of the Pacific,
Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.”

The Nat Geo designation is also done in order to save seas and draw
public attention to areas that are in desperate need of protection.

“We’ve always labelled it, but we labelled it slightly differently (than
other oceans),” Tait said. “This change was taking the last step and saying we
want to recognize it because of its ecological separation.”

The other oceans, according to Nat Geo, are defined by the landmass that
surround them, while the Southern Ocean is defined by a current.

The Southern Ocean has a vital impact on the planet’s climate and Nat
Geo experts want to preserve the water system in an era fueling global
warming
