When the Nigerian flag was first designed in 1959, it had a red sun in between. The concept was the brainchild of Michael Taiwo Akinkumi, who was 23 at the time.
Unfortunately, his contribution largely went unnoticed until 2014, at which time, he received the national award as an Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR). The flag has a white strip with two green strips at the side.

This white section symbolizes the river Niger, passing through the country. It also refers to peace and unity, while the green stands for fertility and vegetation. Whenever the flag is worn out, it has to be immediately replaced, else it is viewed as a mark of disrespect to the country.
