Amazon Quiz (11th October 2021): Which pet animals in Sri Lanka are to be given biometric identity cards as a way of protecting them from ill-treatment?
a) Tigers
b) Dogs
c) Elephants
d) Horses
Answer: (c) Elephants
Sri Lanka released a slew of new regulations aimed at safeguarding and protecting the
country’s elephant population.
According to the AFP
news agency, this involves giving imprisoned elephants their own biometric
identity cards and, more significantly, prohibiting elephant riders from
drinking on the job.
The new law compels
all elephant owners to get new picture identification cards that include a DNA
stamp of the animal(s) under their care. Every six months, the animals must be
examined by a veterinarian.
The goal of the broad new animal protection law is to
preserve the wellbeing of working elephants and impose rigorous rules,
including a daily two-and-a-half-hour bath for each beast.
Wimalaweera Dissanayaka, Sri Lanka‘s Wildlife Protection
Minister, issued these restrictions through a gazette notification,
saying: “The person who owns or has the custody of such elephants shall
ensure that the mahout (rider) is not consuming any liquor or any harmful drug
while employed.”
In a conversation with the website India Narrative, Kartick
Satyanarayan, the Co-Founder and CEO, Wildlife SOS stated: “Any improvement and
amendment on existing laws of any country that addresses the issue of animal
welfare, in this case, elephants, in a compassionate manner while addressing
their ecological, behavioural, and social requirements is always welcome.”
