Answer: Anirban Lahiri

On a TPC Sawgrass stage that creates so much angst, Cameron Smith was as unflappable as ever. Smith had only one par through 13 holes in the final round of The Players Championship. With a two-stroke advantage on the par-3 17th hole and an island in front of him, he hit the most daring shot of his career. He never panicked when he punched out from under the trees into the water on the final hole. The 28-year-old Australian only lost control of his emotions after capping off a difficult week with the biggest victory of his career.

Meanwhile, Lahiri, who had come to within one of Smith after making his own birdie on the 17th, missed a chip in from 41 feet on the 18th, leaving Smith alone at the top of the leaderboard and celebrating a $3.6 million paycheck.

However, it was a memorable result for the Indian golfer, who went into the final day of the Championship with a one-shot lead after finishing the third round with a 5-under 67 on Monday morning. The Indian held the 54-hole lead for only the second time in his career, as he attempted to join countryman Arjun Atwal (2010 Wyndham Championship) as the only Indian to win on the PGA Tour. He was also vying to become the third Asian to win THE PLAYERS, behind K.J. Choi of Korea and Si Woo Kim of South Korea (2017).

Smith made eight of his final nine shots, including a birdie on the par-3 17th and a 3-foot bogey putt on the 18th after hitting into the water. He shot a 6-under 66 to win by one stroke against India’s Anirban Lahiri.
