Veteran singer-composer Bappi Lahiri died on Tuesday night at the age of 69.
Several public figures paid their tributes to the late icon.
With a career spanning over half a decade, Lahiri gave the industry several hit numbers including ‘Chalte Chalte’, ‘Wardat’, ‘Namak Halal’, ‘Sharaabi’, and ‘Commando’.
Starting at the age of 19, the veteran singer moved to Mumbai in 1974 and debuted as a music composer in the 1974 Bengali film, ‘Daadu’. Lahiri soon rose to prominence for composing music for the 1975 Sunil Dutt starrer- ‘Zakhmee’. He also composed a duet in the film titled ‘Nothing Is Impossible’ with Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar.

In the early 80s, Lahiri became the trailblazer for disco music, earning the title of a disco master. Tracks like ‘Hari Om Hari’, ‘Armaan’, ‘Ramba Ho Samba Ho’, ‘Disco Dancer’, and ‘Dance Dance’ featured the disco element.

In 2014, Bappi Lahiri ventured into politics and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Although he contested from the Srerampur Lok Sabha constituency that year, the musician failed to garner enough votes.
Recently, Lahiri released a remix version of his hit track ‘Yaar Bina Chain Kahan Re’ for the 2020 film ‘Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan’ under the title ‘Arey Pyar Kar Le.’ The film starred Ayushmann Khurrana, Gajraj Rao, and Jitendra Kumar.
Bappi Lahiri was last seen on the reality television show Bigg Boss 15 to promote the launch of his grandson Swastik Lahiri’s new track ‘Baccha Party’.
The musician has composed nearly 5,000 songs in over 500 films. Internationally, Lahiri composed the background score for the 1989 Hollywood film ‘Eye Witness to Murder’, music for the English film ‘Divine Lovers’ and two private English albums, ‘Moving Away’ in 1986 and ‘Snake Dance’ in the year 1990.
