Reacting to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s remarks that “railways has a responsibility” over the deadly fire in an office building in Kolkata in which nine were killed, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Amit Malviya said Banerjee shifts the blame, every time there is a tragedy in the state.

“Every time there is a tragedy in WB, all that Mamata Banerjee does is shift blame…,” he tweeted.

“She blamed the Left for bridge collapse in 2016 and fire in AMRI. Social media was blamed for Dhulagarh riots and now Railway is being blamed for the fire, in which they have lost their people!” he tweeted.

Railing against the CM in another tweet, Malviya wrote, “In Mar 2010, when she was in opposition, she questioned lack of disaster management protocols, after the Park Street fire. But after 10 years in office, there has been no improvement in track record of fire safety. Once again, negligence of the State has led to loss of lives.”

In the devastating fire at an office building in Kolkata that houses zonal offices of Eastern and South Eastern Railway, nine people, including four firefighters and three railway personnel, were killed on Monday night, reported PTI.

The CM, who was at the spot, said, “This is a railways property. Railways has a responsibility. Railways was unable to provide a map of the building.” “I don’t want to do politics over the tragedy but no one from the railways has come to the site,” she added, NDTV reported.

The CM also announced Rs 10 lakh for the families of those killed.

Noting that West Bengal needs a “proactive disaster management policy, equip local bodies with fire fighting equipment and put in appropriate protocols,” Malviya said that “Pishi has failed Bengal!”

‘Pishi’ is bengali for ‘paternal aunt’ and has been used by BJP in its slogan — “Bengal Wants Its Own Daughter, Not Pishi”.

Political mercury is rising in West Bengal as Assemble polls are scheduled from March 27 to April 29, in which Trinamool Congress is eying another term and BJP is seeking its maiden rule in the state.
