Coming down heavily on the laws against ‘love jihad’ law, Asaduddin Owaisi claimed that all this was a ploy by the Bharatiya Janata Party to distract youth who fell victim to unemployment.

Three BJP-ruled states — Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana — are planning to put in place laws to check what they call “love jihad”.

Talking to ANI, the President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) said, “It’ll be a gross violation of Articles 14 and 21, scrap Special Marriage Act then. They should study the Constitution.”

These laws will supposedly declare any conversion done for the sole purpose of marriage null and void, and any violation will lead to imprisonment and fine.

Owaisi joins a long list of opposition leaders from across the country who have criticised the slating of such laws and termed them as an encroachment on personal liberty, and an attempt to create a communal divide in the country.

“Such propagation of hatred won’t work,” he said.

The criticism of the moves by UP, MP, and Haryana to bring a law against “love jihad” was led by Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. “Love jihad is a word manufactured by BJP to divide the nation and disturb communal harmony,” he said.

“Marriage is a matter of personal liberty (and) bringing a law to curb it is completely unconstitutional & it will not stand in any court of law…,” Gehlot tweeted.

Earlier this month, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa too informed that his government is considering a law against religious conversion in the name of “love jihad”.
