Narayan Rane, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Meenakshi Lekhi and Bhupender Yadav are among the leaders that were inducted in the union Cabinet on Wednesday in a major reshuffle of the Narendra Modi ministry, first of the NDA government’s second term.

In an exercise meant to make the Cabinet more inclusive — with more OBCs, women — and better representation from states, 43 leaders are expected to take oath, according to a list shared by news agency ANI.

Among others on the list are Apna Dal’s Anupriya Singh Patel, Karnataka leader Shobha Karandlaje, John Barla and Dr L Murugan.

Termed as a ‘big shake up’, the Cabinet reshuffle was preceded by a slew of resignations by Union ministers. Among those who quit were Health Minister Harshvardhan, Education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal,  his MoS Sanjay Dhotre, MoS Women and Child Development Debasree Chaudhuri and Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister D V Sadananda Gowda.

The reshuffle comes at a time when the BJP is bracing to face 5 state assembly elections next year, including the politically crucial Uttar Pradesh, and the government is trying for an image makeover to counter the intense Opposition criticism over the alleged gaps in the handling of the second wave of the COVID pandemic that brought the country to its knees.
